Basque is a isolated language spoken in the Basque Country of northern Spain and southwestern France. It is the only non-Indo-European language spoken in Europe, making it a rare linguistic specimen. Basque is believed to be one of the oldest languages in Europe, predating even Indo-European languages such as Latin and Greek. It is thought to have originated in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain. The Basque people are a proud and independent culture, with their own unique customs and traditions.

Despite its long history, Basque is still a relatively unknown language outside of its native region. In fact, it is estimated that only about one percent of the population in Europe speaks Basque. However, this number is slowly but steadily increasing as more and more people are learning the language.

If you’re interested in learning Basque, there are a few resources that can help you get started. For beginners, the website BBC Languages offers a helpful introduction to the language. For those who want to dive deeper, the University of Nevada Las Vegas offers an online course called “Basque for Beginners.” I think it’s great that there are resources available for people who want to learn the language. Who knows, maybe you’ll be one of the people helping to keep this language alive for future generations.

For me, the fact that it is such a rare and old language makes the whole people and the region mysterious. What were their roots ? What else is hidden ? This is why I thought about locating my magic hidden valley in the Basque country.
